The biggest difference that you’ll see between the new iPad and the iPad 2 is the display. While the iPad 2 packed an impressive-on-its-own screen resolution of 1024×768, the new iPad doubles this to 2048×1536. Combine this with the fact that the newer iPad features a Retina-quality display, and the new iPad’s display blows the iPad 2′s out of the water.

Aside from the Retina display, the new iPad also features a 5-megapixel camera capable of 1080p video recording with tons of enhancements and an upgraded dual-core processor with a quad-core GPU. By comparison, the iPad 2 has a 720p-capable camera and a dual-core processor. If you own a 3G-capable iPad 2 and live in a market with 4G LTE, then this alone might be enough of a reason to upgrade to the new iPad. With speeds up to ten times faster than 3G, 4G on the new iPad means a much faster and more pleasant user experience.

Most of the enhancements are under the hood, though. If you own an iPad 2 and aesthetics are one of the more important qualities to you, then upgrading might not be worth it. For the most part, the form factor and size of the new iPad are the same as the iPad 2. In fact, the new iPad is slightly thicker and heavier than the iPad 2, although it’s unlikely that you would notice.

What will ultimately keep a lot of you iPad 2 owners from upgrading is the cost. The new iPad starts at $499 for the most basic Wi-Fi model. With the iPad 2′s price being slashed to $399, you’ll likely get around $300 on eBay or Craigslist for a basic Wi-Fi model of the iPad 2. That means you’ll pay around $200 to upgrade to the new iPad. It’s certainly not the worst deal in the world.

If money is no object, then the new iPad is easily worth upgrading to. Its Retina Display and improved specs make it a worthy successor to the bestselling tablet of all time. However, if you’re content with your iPad 2′s display and don’t feel a need for 4G speeds, then your new iPad 2 should have plenty of miles left on it.

The new iPad 3 Camera App

One of the first things users will notice about the iPad 3‘s upgraded operating system is the improved camera app. Newly redesigned, the app is sure to allow consumers to make the best of the impressive 5 megapixel camera and the vastly improved retina display that the iPad 3 offers.

Along the same lines, iOS 5.1 has also changed the way face detection works when you take pictures using the iPad. Whereas before the camera app was only able to highlight one face per picture, the new OS allows for the possibility of detecing all faces in the photo. With the iPad 3 updated operating system, however, Apple users can now select which photos they want to us with Photo Stream and then discard the others, instead of having to reset and delete the entire stream each time.

The iPad 3 Improved User Experience

There are a host of other updates that are included with the  iPad’s iOS 5.1 which are aimed at improving the overall experience for its users. When watching shows and movies on the  iPad 3 for example, you will notice that the sound has been optimized to be louder and cleaner.

You can now control payback speed and perform a 30 second rewind on the iPad, and a few tweaks have been made to the way bookmarks open automatically in Safari. Finally, iPad users who have a non-Wi Fi device will now be able to download up to 50 megabytes when they are connected to 3G, instead of the previous limit of 20 megabytes.

Smurfs, those cute little blue cartoon dwarfs inspired by the trolls in Nordic fairy tales and beloved by kids (and childish adults, you know who you are) since the 1950s, are arguably one of the greatest gifts Belgium ever bestowed on the world.

And when “The Smurf’s Village,” a game for iPhone and other Apple gadgets, came out in November, it promised to sprinkle some of that magic on the world of apps.

This Smurf app shot up the charts, becoming the highest-grossing app in the Apple store. And, get this, it was free.

So why are parents turning red with anger?

Smurfberries. One California mom realized her 4-year-old had spent $66.88 on virtual Smurf stuff in the game on the iPad before she figured it out and stopped him. Fortunately he did not discover the “wheelbarrow” option, which can be purchased with two taps and sets you back a whopping $59.99.

“My biggest concern was them scratching the screen. Never in my wildest dreams did I think they would be charging things on it,” the mom told the Associated Press.

Now, don’t go complaining that we are picking on the Smurfs. The makers of Smurf’s Village have added a warning (“PLEASE NOTE: Smurf Village is free to play, but charges real money for additional in-app content. You may lock out the ability to purchase in-app content by adjusting your device’s settings”) and are considering warnings inside the game. Capcom Entertainment Inc., the publisher of “The Smurf’s Village,” says inadvertent purchases by children are “lamentable.”

And the Smurfs are certainly not alone: Six of the 10 highest-grossing iPhone and iPad games are free but encourage purchases. And we are wagering that the bulk of the Smurfs’ haul comes from “addicted adults” who want to quickly build their villages, adding bakeries and zoos (I mean, who wouldn’t, right?). Right now this Smurf app game is the fourth-highest grossing game in the App store.

Many games offer in-app content to be purchase but every time I have tried to buy something, it asks me for my iTunes password. Even when something is free, it cannot be downloaded without the input of my password which is great because my son would go on an app shopping sprees! So blaming the Smurf app or any other app for spending sprees is avoiding responsibilities.
